Developed by Yager Development, Spec Ops: The Line takes us on a mission to find survivors in Dubai, after it was hit by a devastating sandstorm. The continuing sandstorm makes travelling away from the city impossible, and much of the city has been destroyed by the storms. The Line follows the story of a group of marines – Walker, Adams and Lugo – as they attempt to assess the situation and find out if anyone is left alive to be rescued.
I seriously don’t have the skill to properly review this game without diminishing its impact greatly – I don’t think any review can properly do it. Spec Ops: The Line is something that needs to be played without reading much into it – it’s an experience, not a game.
Presentation: 9/10
The apocalyptic Dubai setting is wonderful, and looks beautiful. Voice acting and music are also great.
Story: 10/10
Just play it. You’ll understand this score.
Polish: 8/10
Lots of extra detail, especially on your second playthrough.
Gameplay: 6/10
The gameplay itself is not anything special – it’s merely a vessel for the experience.
Singleplayer: 9/10
As said before, I can’t explain why without experiencing it.
Multiplayer: 5/10
Just ignore the multiplayer. It was added by the publisher simply to add a tick to the back of the box.
Overall: 9/10
If you haven’t got the message yet – just play it. If you think it’s nothing special, then carry on – the first few levels are a “trap” to lure in Call of Duty players into the game’s real narrative.
