Monument Valley 3

Monument Valley 3

Begin a thrilling new voyage into an enchanting puzzle world.

  • Release Date: 10th December 2024
  • Developer: ustwo
  • Publisher: ustwo
  • Platforms: iOS, Android
  • Version Played: Android

The third, and possibly final, Monument Valley game marks a 7 year gap in the franchise. Will this finally do what I want and turn this into a truly challenging puzzle game taking advantage of the impossible objects and perspective tricks? It actually does, eventually.

The main game is more of the same – some beautiful looking areas, great strange geometry, but very little challenge, pretty much go as far as you can then timer with the next object. There does seem to be a greater visual style in this with more varied artstyles, but the main game itself is easier than the previous two.

One new mechanic is using a boat to move between areas, using a virtual analogue stick. This just feels wrong in this game, as everything else is intuitive without needing extra markers, and it doesn’t really add much to the game. I’m not sure what they just didn’t keep the tap to move mechanic.

Once you’ve completed the main game, there’s four additional levels, and these ones are pretty great, requiring some thought and planning in some areas. This is the start of what I wanted from this, although it’s over too quickly. Much more of this would have been very welcome.

You can also sail around the hub to find NPCs, with their own levels. Each is a short single screen level for you to complete, none will last more than 60 seconds. It does bring in some neat new ideas, and feels like these were ideas they couldn’t fit into other levels. Using the ideas like this makes me think that Ustwo aren’t planning on a fourth game. These are all really nice games, but they’ll leave you craving for a full on puzzle game using these ideas.

Fun
