It’s been one year since Children of the Gods, the day that Daniel told Abydos to put their Stargate up so he could return with Sha’re. While he hasn’t rescued her, he wants to inform Kasuf that he’s still looking for her. Hammond approves of the mission, but only Teal’c can go – Jack and Sam are off to receive an award for their analysis of deep-space radar telemetry – a cover for them saving the world, and the President himself is awarding them the medals.
On Abydos, Daniel apologises to Kasuf, who reveals that Sha’re has indeed returned, and is heavily pregnant. He’s confused about Daniel being confused – he thought he saved her and was the father. Daniel visits Sha’re who reveals that she is currently in control – the child will die if the Gou’ald, Amaunet, takes over. Apophis is the father, and hid her on Abydos so rival Gou’ald would not know about it, as the child would be a Harcesis, and have all the knowledge of the Gou’ald, a forbidden act.

In Washington DC, Jack jokes about how it’s much easier to go to other planets than to navigate DC. They head to the formal party, which has other high ranking military officials, including Jacob Carter – Sam’s father. He doesn’t believe their cover story and asks for more information, which Sam can’t give. Jacob also has some amazing news for her – he’s managed to pull some strings and can get her into NASA – she can fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut and actually going into space. Sam has to refuse and can’t explain why to her father.
Jack takes a little break from the reception to head to a nearby bar (he’s not a fan of mingling, especially when he can’t be truthful). He’s accosted by a reporter who asks him about the Stargate Program. Jack denies the existence and when he plays a small clip of Jack mentioning the Stargate, he creates a quick cover story (not a very good one) and leaves to inform Hammond. Hammond wants Jack to find out how much the reporter actually knows.

Daniel and Sha’re agree for Sha’re to return to Earth – the child will be away from Apophis and Sha’re can tell them what she knows before Ammunet takes over. They tell Kasuf to blame a rival of Apophis. As they head to the pyramid, a Gou’ald ship lands – it’s Heru’ur. Not only that, but Sha’re goes into labour and will soon be taken over by Amaunet, but decides to stay to help deliver the baby.
Jack finds the reporter, who seems to know a lot, including how two alien ships were destroyed above Earth recently and that Jack would be a hero once this leaks. Jack doesn’t confirm anything, but makes a joke about a different O’Niel with one L that has “no sense of humour” and heads back into the building, but as the reporter leaves, he gets hit with a car and dies, with Jack rushing over to him. The reporter thinks Jack organised this.

The award ceremony is cancelled due to the “accident”, and as they say goodbye, Jacob informs her that he has lymphoma and that he wants to see his daughter in space before he dies – but she still can’t agree to it. They head back to SGC where Hammond awards them the medals, Sam is honoured while Jack questions if the car crash really was an accident – Hammond denies everything.
Back on Abydos, the child is born. Teal’c, disguised as Heru’ur’s guards, demands to have the baby, with Amaunet also asking for it. Teal’c knocks her out with a Zat gun and give the baby to Kasuf, who goes into hiding with the child. Daniel and Teal’c head to the Heru’ur and tell him that Apophis has already reclaimed the child, but Teal’c found Daniel as a prisoner. Daniel suggests an alliance against Apophis, which Heru’ur refuses. The gate is dialled and Teal’c throws a guard into the Kawoosh.

It’s Jack and Sam, who spring into action instantly, with Jack throwing a knife though Heru’ur’s hand and into his shield, disabling his weapon. He rings back to the ship, but SG-1 have to hide quickly – someone else is coming through the gate – Apophis. Amaunet turns up and tells him that Heru’ur has claimed their son for himself. She also spots SG-1 – but doesn’t reveal them to Apophis, suggesting that Sha’re still has some control. They head off, with SG-1 leaving soon after.
The episode deals with Daniel’s wife, renewing his hope to some day free her. The special child is also going to be something important later down the line, so it’s setting up quite a bit.
