The second Konami Wai Wai World game (or Konami Krazy World as I call it). It involves a robot called Rickle who had been created to save Princess Herb from an evil alien in space. This is a very different game from the first, though, and it doesn’t feel like a bunch of heroes getting together due to how the gameplay works this time.

This is a side-scrolling shooter (not a game with Castlevania style gameplay like the first), and one where your bullets don’t go that far. You play the whole game as Rickle, but at the start you pick from a group of three Konami characters to choose from that will act as your characters throughout the game.

When you find a C token in the game, you can transform into one of your three chosen characters, with a timer counting down until you turn back into Rickle. While you’re powered up, your weapon does more damage and you can’t lose any health, although getting hit will reduce how much time you have left until you revert back to normal. Naturally ,I chose Simon Belmont, whose whip feels like a shotgun.

Because of this, it just feels like Rickle is using holograms to make himself look like the other characters rather than the other characters actually being involved in the the game, and being stuck with a small selection just feels limiting. It makes it not feel like a crossover game.

The levels are an interesting bunch. There are some generic ones, like a dessert level and an underwater one, but others are based on specific games. There’s one based on Contra, which is a bit odd as it’s a much better shooter, so it makes the game feel even more limited. Castlevania is the penultimate level, with sections based on different parts of the castle .

There are also a few bonus types of levels, which usually let you use two parts. There’s a vertical scrolling shooter with Twinvee, a horizontal scrolling shooter with Vic Viper and a choice between a puzzle game and a racing level. These are enjoyable distractions between the main shooting levels. There’s even a Frogger level to reach Castlevania.

This is a fine game, it just lacks the charm that the first game has, largely due to how the Konami characters just feel tacked on rather than the core part of the game. This particular Konami crossover series was pretty much over for a while, and only returned for a bit as a Kart racer. It would be nice to see a new crossover game.

Wai Wai World 2 is a perfect blend of old school NES Konami. The platforming is spot on and the shooting is perfection. I chose this game in hopes that at least one gamer discovers what is now one of my favorite titles. Give Wai Wai World 2 a shot & you will not be disappointed.
