Tile Magician, the translation of the Japanese name Hai no Majutsushi, is the first of quite a few Konami crossover games, which I will be playing alongside Castlevania games (as long as it’s got Castlevania parts to it, naturally). They said, we’re starting with what is (hopefully) the most boring of the lot.

This is just a Mahjong game with various Konami characters, including Simon Belmont. There’s nothing special about how they’re used in this game, they’re just portraits that occasionally pop up as you play. One interesting feature, though, is that each character does have stats for how often they use specific tactics, and you can adjust these freely for each character.

But it seems to be a decent version of mahjong. The game will make it clear when you can use a tile for a set and there are practice and tournament modes, and the Konami characters, which also includes characters form the likes of Goemon, Gradius and Knightmare are more interesting than the usual old men in these games.

Poor
For the era if arrived, Hai no Majutsushi really wasn’t all that special. It had the Konami logo on it, and the barest amount of mascot art included, but it’s really just a Mahjong game, through and through.

Remake or remaster?
Not for this.
