In 2004, Konami released an updated version of the Java port of Castlevania, and this one has been preserved online. The graphics are much closer to the NES original, visually making this the first time Castlevania was properly on a portable device (for a very short amount of time).

With this being on a keypad, you have 2, 4, 6 and 8 to move and jump (stairs are a pain), 5 for attack and one of the symbol keys for your subweapons. It’s really not nice to play, feeling fiddly and inaccurate. It may look like NES Castlevania, but it certainly doesn’t play like it.

There’s also another interesting change: the levels themselves. They’re mostly the same as the original, just condensed, with smaller gaps and higher floors just missing the top of Simon’s head. It’s noticeable in the bat boss, where the small stairs were removed completely.

Poor
The second edition of the game was an improvement over what came before. The graphics (as shown in the one screenshot we could find at full-size) were cleaner and crisper, much improved over the NES edition even.

Remake or remaster?
It’s just a basic version of the original.
Official Ways to get the game
