DreamMix TV World is a Smash Bros clone that combines characters from Konami, Hudson and Takara (a Japanese toy company). This means an odd mix of characters such as Bomberman, Optimus Prime, The kid from mYu-Gi-Oh, Licca (a Barbie-like doll) and Solid Snake. Of course, there’s also a Castlevania representative in the form of Simon Belmont, meaning this game contains two future Smash characters.

Each round starts off with hearts being spewn across the arena, which acts as health. As you bash each other, you’ll lose these and other people can collect them. Lose too many and your “should” (in the form of a heart with wings) will float off. If you can capture it before anyone else, you’ll be back into the fight. It really feels more like “we need a health gimmick like Smash” more than something more meaningful.

Simon has his trusty whip and a cross, which is quite large and can dish out a lot of damage. The charters in DreamMix really don’t feel balanced, but the cross does make Simon handy for running away and chipping away – nobody can compete with Optimus turning into a truck. He has four skins, which I feel could have been different Belmonts.

Outside of a very short (and easy) arcade mode, there’s also a mission mode, with each character having their own stage. Simon’s is a time trial as you race around the Dracula’s Castle stage and collect the flying soul heart, but does require some advanced jumping techniques, and flying medusa heads are added to the stage as obstacles.

With moves not being that varied, it’s nothing more than a fun little amusement to see these characters fighting each other (although the amount of crossovers now makes it less impactful). It really does feel more like “how can we copy smash brothers” rather than a celebration of these characters.

Fun
Optimus Prime can tear across the whole screen in truck form while being invulnerable to most attacks; however, he is vulnerable to a few attacks, like Snake’s C4s, and is also vulnerable as he transforms at the beginning and end of his routes. Thinking ahead is very key in this game, especially since some moves are slow to come out or set up for certain vulnerabilities.
