At last, a new home console version of both Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. This should have been a special release across all platforms with the effort both games deserve, yet it was exclusive to the PS4. Why? Well, these are actually not native ports of the games, but instead modified versions of the PSP ports from Dracula X Chronicles running in a PSP emulator. Which means it’s just that without the remake.

There are some minor changes. There’s some visual options, all of them pretty bad, trophy support, and some backgrounds. They actually do cut off the black lines from the video this time, so that’s one annoyance gone. There’s also added vibration (although pretty much anything seems to set it off) and all pickups and some enemy sounds will, rather annoyingly, come though the controller speaker with the only way to turn it off being to go into the console settings and turn the speaker off there.

The emulation isn’t perfect, either, with Symphony of the Night having additional loading screens plus slowdown in areas. It’s a really muted release, which is just so disappointing for games of this caliber. They deserve so much more, and people are begging for them.

Ultimately, whether the collection is worth it depends on your familiarity with Castlevania. If you’ve never played Symphony of the Night in any form, this is a must-buy. If you’re a longtime Castlevania fan who somehow missed out on Rondo of Blood up to this point, Requiem is also worth checking out. But if you’ve played both these games to death, there’s little reason to download this unless you really want those trophies.
