While I’ve not played the game yet, I have played the demo which game out just before release. It’s the next in line of the Sonic racing series that started with Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing (with Banjo-Kazooie), with Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed providing one of the best kart racing games. Team Sonic Racing tried to do things a little different with team mechanics, but it didn’t quite work. CrossWorlds seems to go backwards a bit to where Transformed left off and builds up on its mechanics.

On top of the car, boat and plane transformations of vehicles, CrossWorlds takes the “evolving” nature of the courses up another level. At the end of lap 1, there will be a choice of ring portals that the leader can choose from, these will take you to a “CrossWorld”, with the second lap taking place on a new location for a spectacle-filled A-to-B lap. These are filled with a ton of action and are great fun, and the transition between them being a ton of fun.

Even in the demo – with three tracks and a bunch of CrossWorlds – the tracks are extremely varied and quite lovely. The focus is much more on Sonic instead of Sega in general, although characters from Persona and Yakuza will be added. There will also be DLC with non-Sega characters from franchises like SpongeBob, Minecraft, Avatar, TMNT, Pac-Man and more.

Unfortunately, what seems to be letting the game down is the lack of single player content. The grand prix tries to make things more exciting by picking a rival for you (with a bit of dialogue back and forth), and the fourth track has you play one lap on the previous three courses, along with achievement-like challenges to aim for, but there’s no lengthy mission mode like the previous games. Hopefully this will change, but it reduces the game to something to wait for a discount for.
