Moonlight Rhapsody was a short lived Chinese mobile game that released a beta, ended up in development hell and seems to have been quietly cancelled. Even though the apk contains all the data (you can extract all models and textures), nobody has currently found a way to bypass the online check, meaning I had no way to play the game. I did find some gameplay footage that covers the first area of the game, the only part that was released.

The game is set 100 years after Symphony of the Night, explaining that many resurrection attempts and different demon hunting groups have formed to stop them. After a tutorial with Alucard, the plot focuses on a new bunch of characters, including a new Belmont called Florrie (the Morris clan has the Vampire Killer), a vampire called Yolanda and a werewolf girl called Sarah, who has cute wolf ears in her hair. That said, legacy characters could still be purchased to play as, just with no role in the story.

The gameplay looks similar to the other mobile game, Grimoire of Souls, with 2D movement and a main action button, with other abilities. However, the map in this one is all connected, metroidvania-style, with you reaching and defeating Dracula. Supposedly there were three castles eventually added, but I couldn’t find any information or footage of them.

Overall, Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody looks like it’s in pretty rough shape. Even for a stripped-down mobile title it seems like the company developing the title, Shengqu Games, has bitten off a lot and doesn’t seem to have the skill to really pull it off. Fans of the series outside of China may never be able to play this title, and right now that looks more like a blessing than a curse.
