Despite having the number V be the basis of the game’s logo and box art, this was the start of Mortal Kombat ditching numbered titles for a while (before eventually returning to it with the last three main games: X, 11 and 1). Mortal Kombat isn’t my thing, but this version does seem to cater to a single player a bit more, yet is still lacking the option to just let you pick an opponent to fight.

The Konquest mode is a sort of long tutorial and training for Deadly Alliance, where you work though missions where you have to pull off different moves. That said, even for someone as bad at fighting games as me, it starts off extremely slowly, so you have to work though the immensely basic stuff before you can really start. It’s a welcome addition to the franchise.

Deadly Alliance seems like a decent fighting game, yet on GameCube it has one big flaw: the teeny tiny D-pad. As the game doesn’t give you the option of using the analogue stick, you’re fully stuck with it for performing the complicated combos. And on top of this, you also have to remember three sets of combos as you can switch between different fighting styles. It seems like a decent entry in the series, but other people are far more qualified to decide upon that.

Fine
MK has had its fighting system completely overhauled, and it’s certainly a change for the better. Despite the game playing vastly differently from before, many of the the best elements, such as insane juggle-combos and the infamous fatalities, have been kept in place – even the special moves are executed in corresponding ways. That’s about where the similarities end, though. New to the series is Deadly Alliance’s innovative use of fighting styles to add more depth to the proceedings.

Remake or remaster?
A collection would be good.
