With the success of NBA Street, it was inevitable for EA to branch off into other sports. On top of this, the arcade style NFL Blitz was on its last legs, with EA dealing the final blow by making the NFL license exclusive. So they were essentially handed an open goal for arcade style American Football games.

And they actually did a good job with it. Unlike the likes of Backyard Football, the game isn’t slower, but rather simplified in another way: the play book. There’s a simpler play book and, as a result, the game is far less like tactics and more about how you control the ball on the field.

Running around and dodging feels freer than other American Football games, and you can even barge through people tackling if you time it right. This style of play really suits the street nature of things and, as a result, this is the most fun I’ve had with American Football.

Fun
We could have done with some more extras or something to break it all up a bit, like a wacky training mode. Making running backs charge through walls to demonstrate how to break tackles, or passing a ticking bomb to show you how to do laterals. That sort of thing would have been most welcome, and totally in keeping with the style of the game.

Remake or remaster?
We could do with fun, silly sports games again.
