Another co-op beat-em-up where stars of Nickelodeon shows work together to fight a non-descript threat. Although for a good portion of the game you’re stuck with just SpongeBob SquarePants and Danny Phantom characters (Nickelodeon must have been really desperate to push that show). The gameplay does actually feel completely reworked and it does feel nicer to play. It still doesn’t feel good to play, but it’s still an improvement.

The combat itself is still very tedious, with enemies taking too many hits and just having to deal with so many (on your own, your useless companions don’t help). Everyone now has the same kind of attacks, with one melee and a long range missile that has limited ammo, so you’re generally just mashing A.

However, it has more of a platformer focus, and the developers were kind enough to not put in many locked gates that only open when you kill all the enemies. As the only reward for defeating enemies are gubbins to unlock pointless costumes for the tiny characters, it means it’s much more fun to just run past the vast majority of enemies. Which seems like a rather bad thing for a beat-em-up.

Poor
Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island is a shameless ploy designed to trick children into buying a game merely because it features characters whom they already know and love. Kids in love with Spongbob and his zany antics, will no doubt get a kick out of this game, but there is little here to amuse people who are not Nickelodeon diehards.
