The second Mario Kart Arcade GP was a follow-up of Namco’s first Mario Kart outing, this time with Mametchi from Tamagotchi Planet joining the cast (as well as Waluigi), which feels like a very random addition. This game features the card system (where you could print out a card) where it tracks your unlockable but gives access to all characters form the start. In the original, most places opted for a standard unit without this feature, which made unlocking characters something you could only do in that session.

On top of new items, which work the same way with three types in each race (but everyone can choose their own three in the fourth race of each cup), the other major feature is the commentary, with a very enthusiastic bloke yelling about every action, talking about the items you use, when you over take someone and even complains when there isn’t a lot of action. It’s bit too much for listening to over a long period, but makes sense for short bursts you’ll get from an arcade game.

In terms of tracks, this offers two new cups (with previous ones returning), which is only four new tracks. Waluigi gets a stadium track with a dinosaur junkyard theme, while Yoshi cup gets a colourful and vibrant Yoshi’s Island style course. The Yoshi courses are absolutely beautiful, and the only ones I’d like to see as a retro track in a new Mario Kart – using the two different routes for different laps.

Fun
If the first one is a rarity to find in arcades then this sequel is like finding something good to say about Britney Spears (harsh I know but I’m not a fan). Other than cosmetic alterations little has changed. Each character now has their own custom designed kart like the DS version while Waluigi and a Tamagotchi called Mametchi now join the crew. Can’t say I ever heard of the latter but then again I used to kill tamagotchi’s when given the chance.

Remake or remaster?
A collection of Mario Kart arcade games would be nice.
