Usually with the final sports games for consoles, there isn’t much to talk about as it’s literally the previous year with stat changes, while new platforms get a new version. However, because the Wii was getting a new Madden, the GameCube also got a new version. I also managed to find a setting to change the playbook into the user-friendly one I used in the earlier GameCube Madden games.

One new feature this year is a tutorial going through the basic movement and moves, a very overdue addition it goes though things like the multiple kinds of tackles and dodges, which I was able to use to give me more control in the main mode. This mode also includes three levels of challenges to build up your skills.

While most of the gameplay feels the same, these small additions just makes it feel like you have more choice over the actual gameplay, stopping your opponents while finding space to make your own runs. Essentially, it makes the game fun once again for people that aren’t into the sport.

Another welcome return are a few fantasy teams and stadiums, giving you a bit of visual variety when you want a bit of fun, and there are even plenty of historical teams plus German American Football teams. It’s a good sports game, and the final game for the GameCube.

Fun
You’ll note we haven’ told you if it’s any good yet. It’s very simple: If you like American football, Madden is the best you can get. If you have no interest in the sport, you can halve the score. Madden has a real love for the game, but there’s not much for you if you don’t share the love.
