Alien Hominid was the first game created by The Behemoth, it was originally a Flash game released on Newgrounds before being expanded into a console game. It’s a side scrolling shooter which, despite colourful graphics, is brutal. Both in terms of violence and difficulty.

With this originally being a flash game, you can only shoot forwards or upwards – no diagonal shooting. Enemies either exploded in giant explosions or large fishes of blood. This covers up enemies and bullets, so you’ll constantly get hit by stuff you can’t see. Which is quite a significant problem when you die in one hit.

There are vehicles you can commandeer, you’ll want to do this at every opportunity as you can run over enemies and can’t die until the vehicle has been destroyed. Useful for the massive amount of enemies to encounter. Then the game turns extremely difficult again.

For their first console game, it’s well done, and will please fans of classic side scrolling shooters, and the developer would go on to make some wonderfully addictive games like Castle Crashers. So a good start.

Fine
With its strictly 2D graphics and deceptively simple play mechanics, Alien Hominid will not appeal to everyone. But if you grew up with this kind of game on older systems, or if you just enjoy fast-paced action games in general, this is one of the best on GameCube.
