I’ve played a Japanese horse simulator before – G1 Stable on N64 – and I failed to even enter my horse into a race in that one. Thankfully, Derby Horse 3 seems to be much simpler, and I was able to breed horses, raise them and enter them into a race. You start your ranch with a single horse which has retired, all you can do is buy some horse semen to get it pregnant. As you have limited funds, the start of the game is immensely boring, as the only thing you can really do is skip time.

While there are some auctions for some younger horses, you’re not going to have the money to buy anything other than the cheapest under 1 year old horse, so you still have to wait a while before you can race. Once your young horses get old enough, you can start training them (although you don’t seem to be able to customise this much) and then enter them in races, choosing a jockey and making other options (although your staff can choose for you).

As far as I could tell, there isn’t really much to do in the game until a race happens or until something goes wrong with one of your horses. However, I could potentially be missing a lot.

Fine
Compared to Davista, the range of degrees of freedom is quite different. I think it’s close to the winning post

Remake or remaster?
There’s probably better horse racing simulators.
