With the name “MetalX” and the extremely crazy cover art, I expected something extremely over the top racing game, but this is more of a lame Tony Hawk’s clone on motorbikes. Each level has some basic challenges for you to complete, with the same NPC repeated ten times throughout each level to give them out to you. Things like making specific jumps, crashing into objects or a few time trials.

There are a few additional modes. Each main level also has some stunt modes, free roam and a checkpoint race with seemingly randomly placed checkpoints (you’ll often need to explore to find a jump to make it past some gaps, which can end your run if you pick the wrong way). There are some minigames, including a darts where you hurl your biker off into a pit. Oddly, launching yourself from the highest multiplayer will land you on the highest score almost every time.

The graphics are really strange. The draw distance is abysmal and the game first loads in objects and scenery as transparent, so you can see the skybox behind it. It makes the game look broken and jarring, and any high jump is rewarded with looking at the blurry background picture. The driving itself is just about competent, but not much fun, and the levels just don’t have any flow – in one, I made a big jump, smashed through some windows and there was just a dead end, not even a ramp to reverse your direction on. It’s a really poorly designed game. Get a poster of the box art, as it’s better than the game.

Poor
Freestyle MetalX is worth renting if you’re a fan of the motocross genre, but the game has enough problems to keep casual fans from finding too much to enjoy here. The trick system might be cool, but the rest of the game can’t really pull its own weight, leaving behind an uneven final product.

Remake or remaster?
It’s just another poor Tony Hawk clone
