This one caused a big of annoyance in North America – the first game took so long to localise and as soon as that released, they announced that the sequel would be released in a couple of months. Europe never got the first, so anyone not a fan of the anime would start part way through the story. The many returning characters feel the exact same, with the same moves, and none of the core gameplay elements seem to have been tweaked. The story mode does consist of more missions, with dull dialogue in between, but it is just a bunch of fights in many of the same locations.

The one main addition is fights with more than two people. The story will give you two allies on some missions, who occasionally get pot shots in but mostly just get in the way, which I suppose is a slight variation (although there’s no reason to change how you play) while some have you against multiple opponents. This is horrible as you’re just locked onto someone until they’re finished. The gameplay wasn’t designed for this. If you want more of the first one, then it’s more of that.

Fine
Against a mate or (yes!) three, though, this is a fast and responsive battler – which, believe it or not, makes it one of the finest on GameCube.
