Edgy sports games were a big trend in this era, and one core point that many stuck to was that every single character had to be someone everyone would hate and nobody would want to play as. Which is a rather odd choice. Like other golf games, Outlaw Golf uses the swing via analogue stick mechanics but also does it in a way that’s halfway towards the classic button tap a bar method. After you finish aiming, you press A and it shows a power bar, which fills as you pull back. It still takes skill to get 100%, but you can actually see what you’re doing – it even gives you a recommended percentage to aim for. I found shots to be far more consistent than the other GameCube golf games so far (other than Super Monkey Ball 2).

What lets Outlaw Golf down are the golf courses themselves. There’s only three, and they’re quite poorly designed. The very first hole features a bridge that you WILL hit if you pull off a decent tee. There’s also a strange mechanic where your character gets annoyed if you land on the rough and performs worse, with you having to beat up your caddy to calm your player down. All rather odd. Which makes it even stranger that this seems to be the best analogue stick swing mechanic for golf I’ve come across so far.
The Outlaw series would go on for a few more sports (and a second Golf game), but none of them made it to the GameCube. The developer was then purchased and merged into EA.

Fine
Outlaw Golf manages to be both a realistically entertaining golf game in terms of physics and an off-beat quirky experience that is rarely seen in games these days, let alone golf games. The various characters that you can control are wildly original and the unlockable goodies are definitely worth the effort it takes to get’em. If you are looking for an easy-to-play and amusing golf experience on the GameCube then Outlaw Golf is the way to go.
