After a tragic accident sends Sam Fisher into a dark spiral, he’s much more willing to go undercover, trying to get information while doing missions for the enemy, staring by helping one of their members escape from jail. During the missions, you’ll have to make choices, such as choosing to kill or knock out someone. These will benefit either the spy organisation or the terrorists – and you’ll have to balance this throughout the game.

Unfortunately, this has the same major issue on GameCube as the previous game: the controls are a complete and utter mess, using combinations of buttons to activate specific features. I still don’t know why the PDS (with the objectives, equipment and other information) isn’t on the Start button with the option to press Y or something to then bring up options. On top of that, the GameCube version is again split into smaller levels and doesn’t run very well.

Really, the whole release of Double Agent is a bit of a mess. The SD and HD versions of the game are wildly different, not only with different gameplay and level design, but even different locations, and both have good and bad points. It means there’s a good game in there, but no ideal way to actually play it.

Fine
It’s a shame this might be Fisher’s swansong on Nintendo – at least for a while. But then, it’ll prove hard to top this – it takes everything that was good about Chaos Theory and tightens it up, to the point that the one-heralded quicksave option now feels slightly cheap.

Remake or remaster?
This Splinter Cell is the most in need of a remaster or remake, combining the best bits of both versions.
Official Ways to get the game
There’s no official way to buy this version of Splinter Cell Double Agent, just the HD version on Xbox (or bad PC port of the HD version)
