A very strange game, even for SpongeBob Squrepants. It involves Spongebob, Patrick and Plankton having odd dreams which, naturally, involve platforming. Now, it’s not a terrible idea as it means they can just go crazy with designs and create a very varied game. But this is just a tired platformer with a few minigames here and there.

The movement and platforming mechanics actually felt decent in the previous Spongebob games, but here it’s exactly the kind of off-feeling licensed tie-in you’d expect. The game also tells you absolutely everything you need to do: jump over this, activate this switch, defeat these enemies and so on. There’s even some “block” puzzles where there are giant arrows on the floor and trying to his stuff in the wrong way just does nothing. It makes it all feel like busywork.

Now, Patrick had a different move set in the previous games and his gameplay from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie could have made for a great game – but here, he’s just a copy of Spongebob. His batch of levels do have a nice comic book style to them, but they’re just the exact same thing.

Between each tedious platforming level are some different sections, such as a driving section for Spongebob, flying for Patrick and a few actually fun sections for Plankton. While you appear to be racing someone in the driving sections, it’s just a time trial as Spongebob stops in a cutscene at the end and gets taken out. It all just feels like padding, which is amazing as the platforming also feels like padding. There’s just no subsctance.

Poor
I’ve played a lot of Spongebob games, and I’ve enjoyed them a whole lot. But this just felt like a giant miss. The levels were long and boring. The story made no sense. The gameplay was just so bland. It felt like a giant slog to get through and I can’t recommend this to anyone.
