Swingerz Golf, or Act Golf as it was called in Europe (due to a stronger meaning of “swingers” here), is a golf game that tries to straddle the line between silly fun and simulation. It has a colourful cast of characters and crazy clubs to choose from, yet features rather regular courses to play on. It looks decent for the most part, but I really think that extending the colourful nature of the characters over to the courses would have helped.

The gameplay is the same. It takes a control scheme from some Japanese N64 golf games I hated: using the analogue stick to swing. It does make it slightly better due to the use of the c-stick so you can get straight into swinging without having to press a button after you finish aiming, but I’ve never been accurate at it. There feels like there’s no consistency, with my shots not going close to the target, even when I get 100% power and “excellent” accuracy.

There are a few additional things to extend the game, such as a mission mode and some minigames, but when I can’t get on with the core gameplay, they have the exact same problems.

Fine
This is quite nice. Not brilliant, not bad – just nice. Like a nice cup of tea. Despite golf games not really being that high on our agenda, this turned out to be a competent, highly enjoyable – not to mention relaxing – piece of software.
