A supercross game that’s very similar to ATV 2, with a similar control scheme and no optional button mapping, so no using shoulder buttons for acceleration and braking, and it even has the same trick mechanic of priming your jumps before a ramp. The biggest difference in terms of how the game plays is that supercross bikes are far more fragile than quad bikes and you’ll crash very easily.

Tracks come in arena and baja types. Arena tracks are thankfully not contained in a stadium, they’re just more traditional circuit racers. Baja racers are still mostly a large circuit, but the circuit is made up of checkpoints that an arrow points towards and you’re free to try and make your own shortcuts and routes. That said, the arrow is a strange shape and it’s often difficult to tell where it is pointing.

The career mode has an interesting presentation as you start off in a crummy apartment hand work yourself up to better ones as you make your way through the game. Your agent, friends, family and sponsors will leave voicemail for you and everything is presented nicely (which does have the side-effect of annoying loading screens). It’s a surprising amount of effort, and would have been great if the core racing was more enjoyable.

Fine
The problem is that with so many shortcomings, SX Superstar has to entice you into playing it with, and what little there is just isn’t all that fun.

Remake or remaster?
The career mode here is a good idea for racing games.
