Tennis games are usually fast, frantic and fun. It’s a simple sport that should be simple enough to get right. Yet here comes WTA Tour Tennis to show us how dull a tennis game could be if done poorly. It’s slow, dull and monotonous. In terms of gameplay, it’s completely and utterly outmatched by Monkey Tennis from Super Monkey Ball 2.
Everything is just really slow in WTA Tour, from the movement of players to the speed of the ball. Now, this could potentially work if the game was good at the strategy side of things, but there’s none of that here, instead the result of every single swing is completely unpredictable. Some hits send the ball flying high into the air to allow for a power shot, but it takes a good five seconds or more for the ball to complete its arc. And then the resulting power shot isn’t impactful in any way.
You start off with very little unlocked, not even a grass court, so you have to play through the tournament mode. There’s no options so you have to complete full two-set matches where you have to win 6 games per set (not best of six, first to six). With how slow and poorly controlled the game is, a single match is immensely monotonous and takes far too long.
Oh, and single play and tournament are the only modes in the game. You can’t create a player, there’s no minigames and no training. There’s nothing here.
Poor
It isn’t all dull, though. One feature we enjoyed a great deal wat the way the players’ heads snapped back in the slow-motion replays after getting hit in the face by a wayward serve. Maybe that’s the power of GameCube at work. Have some!
