Zoids: Battle Legends, known as Zoids Vs II in Japan, is the second in a trilogy of Zoids games, and the one of them that was translated into English. The text in the game has a rather off feeling about it, like it was done immensely cheaply and I wasn’t surprised to find out, when I looked it up afterwards, that multiple character names were wrong.

For the most part, this is more of the first. This does feature bigger landscapes as opposed to the smaller arenas of the first, which is nice but also highlights the terrible draw distance even more. The objectives also feel a bit more varies, with one mission where you need to flee rather than fight. This also means more protection missions. One of these was a pain as the Zoid I had to protect kept jumping off a cliff and dying, while another I simply couldn’t get past as I emptied the entirety of my ammo into the attacking enemies (which you have to kill) and they still had a ton of health.

It’s a shame because this should be better than the first as it has more variety, but the mission themselves are poorly designed (and the story told so poorly that you don’t know your objective until you check it out in the pause menu) that it’s more annoying to play.

Fine
While Zoids: Battle Legends had the makings of a decent action game, it falls short due to several key issues. For starters, the lock-on system needs serious work. It arbitrarily locks on to enemies behind you when it’s supposed to focus on the closest enemies, regardless of their position. Movement feels awkward at best, with vehicles lacking any real sense of weight. The main story mode is also maddeningly difficult, even during the earliest of stages.

Remake or remaster?
A collection of Zoids games would be nice for fans.
