This was one genre I was dreading reaching: the low effort co-op kids games. You smash stuff, solve some really basic puzzles and occasionally jump on things. They’re designed for 2 or 4 players and are generally utterly mindless – the only ones that really manage to escape this are the LEGO games. The first Shrek game had a rather fun video game and, instead of improving on this, they just went with pure tedium for the wildly popular sequel.

One thing I was surprised about was how quickly I softlocked the game. On the first level, you find some eyeballs, smash up some enemies, then repeat smashing enemies a few times. Then the game tells you to throw an enemy at a target. But you’ve already killed them. I imagine almost everyone would encounter this issue first time and you have to start the level from scratch. Shows how well it was tested.

You play through levels loosely based on the film, and you usually had a side character filling in the fourth spot. For most of the game, this is Little Red Riding Hood, but a completely different version to the one seen in the film. They do at least explain this in cutscenes, and the cast are voiced by random people that don’t sound like the main actors – with the narrator being the worst by far. It’s a game that can help you sleep.

Poor
At the end of the day, at best, Shrek 2 only has any merit in so far as it isn’t quite as bad as some other games. Which is hardly much of a recommendation.
