A Japanese only quiz game that uses the microphone to give your answers. As I can’t read or speak Japanese, I had to use healthy amounts of pausing the emulator to translate, working out the answer and then translating it back to Japanese and figuring out the pronunciation. It’s very much cheating, but the only way to try it out.

Now, my attempts at pronunciation are likely to blame, but I could only get the game to recognise one of my answers. It also kept telling me off for talking too loud, despite not shouting at all. For one, I tried multiple ways to say Dragon Quest in Japanese. It was the right answer, but the game wouldn’t accept any (it was the right answer). Luckily, despite my original research suggesting that the game was microphone only, you also have the option of using a controller as well.

And it makes the game so much easier, as it also turns the questions into ones with multiple choice answers. I still had to pause to translate, but I could answer questions much better. Although I did find that some of the specific terms were translated into more generic ones, such as a question about a certain type of dish being translated to just “chicken” and the question asking what meat is used in it. Not an issue with the game, just something I found curious.

When it comes to questions, the game has around 15 categories and you pick five to use. In singleplayer, these five categories will be used for all your attempts. I decided to pick video games, anime, food, trivia and geography. There’s also a few different kinds of games to play, such as a basic quiz, a roulette one and bingo based one where answering a question guarantees one of your numbers will be drawn.

There was one that was a bit different. When the question comes up, you choose someone to answer the question (either yourself or an opponent). Against the computer, this is very random, but against friends it sounds like a great idea. If you don’t know an answer, you can pin it on a friend you think will get it wrong (they lose points). For a few rounds, you get extra points if the person you choose gets the answer right. It’s a fun mode.

Without the microphone (which would be annoying to pass around anyway), this would still be a fun party game, so it’s a shame it never got an English translation, especially as it’s the only quiz game on the platform.

Fun
Densetsu no Ouiz-Ou features 8000 questions across a variety of genres, including sports, movies and food. The game is meant to feel like a quiz show, as you use the GameCube microphone for responses. Score big during quiz sessions, and you’ll earn trophies and other bonus items as a reward.

Remake or remaster?
Would be nice to see Nintendo revisit this.
