In 2005, Sega sold off Visual Concepts and the Sega Sports games to Take Two Interactive, who used to form a new publishing label called 2K (based on the naming convention of Sega’s sports titles). While the publisher also delved into non-sports games, sports were still an important part of it, and has proved to be a huge success due to focusing on sports that EA didn’t have a monopoly on. Major League Baseball 2K6 was the only game they put on GameCube.

Now, this seems like a really in depth baseball game with a ton of features, but it really doesn’t explain anything the first time you play. I felt incredibly dumb when, after the buttons seemed to not make the batter swing, I spent the first innings thinking I was actually the pitcher and confused as to why the opponent was doing nothing, like perhaps the easy difficulty was too easy.

But it turns out that you use the C-stick to swing. With this knowledge, I tried again and actually swinging the bat didn’t really make much difference. With my tail between my legs, I managed to find the option for more traditional controls and my first swing was a home run, with most subsequent swings being long distance as well.

If you had the time and patience to learn all the games systems, I’m sure there’s a solid baseball game here, but it’s not very welcoming to newcomers, which seems like an issue when it isn’t just new to GameCube, but also a new generation with the Xbox 360.

Fun
If you’re a baseball fan and the only game console you own is Nintendo’s GameCube, then by all means, go out and grab Major League Baseball 2K6. Its portrayal of the sport may not be exciting, but the underlying gameplay is deep and satisfying.
