Radirgy was an arcade vertical shooter which was released in arcades in 2005, before receiving ports in 2006 for the PlayStation 2, Dreamcast (it was still ticking along in Japan) and the GameCube. Milestone added “GeneriC” to the name of the GameCube version, both a play on the “GC” initials and a joke about how they considered the game to be anything but generic. A rather odd joke to use for the name of a game, as first impressions are important, and the PlayStation versions “PreciouS” sounds more appealing.

The game features some nice cel-shaded graphics and a crazy story about someone that is allergic to radio waves (the name is a portmanteau of Radio Allergy), and terrorists are trying to destroy a vaccine. This, naturally, mans you have to fly a little ship and blast through hundreds and hundreds of enemies, alongside some massive bosses.

The main mechanics involves your “bomb” weapon. As you destroy enemies, they leave tokens for you to collect which charges up your attack. This special attack will destroy both enemies and bullets, and will also suck in tokens from across the screen, so timing the blasts perfectly to suck in a load more tokens will allow you to perform a second straight away.

Other than that, you have a little melee attack and can use a shield when you stop firing, which are interesting little bits. But, outside of the strange plot, and colourful graphics, there wasn’t all that to differentiate the gameplay from other bullet hell shoot-em-ups.

Fine
But despite some Ikaruga-rivalling toughness, Radirgy just isn’t very interesting. There’s nothing to make you gasp or wonder or nod your head with respect. The little black wristband we got Sellotaped to the box for preordering the game is all that left a lasting impression. ‘Generic’ is right.

Remake or remaster?
This was included in the rather boring sounding Ultimate Shooting Collection alongside Chaos Field and Karou, which came out on the Wii in North America. A re-release of that would be good.
Official Ways to get the game
There’s no official way to buy Radirgy GeneriC.
