The final Zatch Bell game on GameCube is curious, because the original Japanese version from 2004 was exclusive to the PlayStation 2, so whoever decided to localise the game for North America in 2006 opted for the GameCube instead of making it an early Wii game – which I feel was a massive mistake as you likely would have had early Wii adopters giving this a try because it looks interesting, instead of being something just for fans of the anime to play on their old console.

In this, you mainly play as the human giving orders to the the demon-like mamodo, with them moving independently to you. You can tell them to attack (hold the A button down for different attacks once you unlock them) and being able to punch as the human. Landing a hit on your opponent will make them drop their mamodo-controlling book and stun them for a bit. You can also control the mamodo directly, although attacks don’t seem to be as accurate.

The game follows the plot of the show and you’re not limited to just battles, as some will have objectives instead (this was new for the localisation), giving a bit of variety as you play. I feel like its the best out of the Zatch Bell games, especially as the combat feels like its own thing and not a clone of another game.

Fun
With its sizable cast of characters and lengthy story mode, Zatch Bell! Mamodo Fury offers a lot of very familiar content in one package. However, the gameplay is far too shallow and frustrating to be satisfying. If you’re unfamiliar with Zatch Bell! this isn’t a good place to start, because it provides no context for the license and does nothing to appeal to those who aren’t already intimately familiar with the series. The result is just another perfunctory anime-inspired fighting game that fails to distinguish itself beyond its license.
