The intro video to this one is rather curious. It’s all about vintage baseball, which is a theme for the whole game, but plays against Smash Mouth’s All Star. I get that it’s in the name of the game, but it’s really strange that it’s in the version that is all about glorifying the old days of baseball.

The vintage theme of this game extends to all the menus and helps the game feel unique. The scenario mode lets you take over in the middle of previous games and includes introductions from players (although, despite the film grain, the scenarios are from the previous season). There’s also other interesting features such as stadium tours with explanations for various designs and important items on the walls.

But the core game feels like before, with perfect AI catching nearly every ball and everything taking a whole. Other reviews suggest that this is the best version of the game so far, but I still had more fun with All-Star Baseball 2000.

Fine
All-Star Baseball 2004 is available for all three major video game consoles. The GameCube version has cleaner textures than the PlayStation 2 version, but that’s really the only difference separating the two visually. The only significant drawback to the GameCube version is that it doesn’t offer downloadable roster updates–a feature that’s included in both the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions.
On the GameCube, it’s either this game or 3DO’s High Heat Major League Baseball 2004. Unless you’re terribly picky about the number of available pitches or the percentage of ground ball outs, there really isn’t much reason to wait around for 3DO’s game. All-Star Baseball 2004 has just about everything you could want in a baseball game.

Due to 3DO going burst, High Heat never released on GameCube
