Animaniacs was a show with a brilliant intro, so it’s always a shame that this game doesn’t show it at any point. That said, you will hear an instrumental version of it a lot throughout the game. The overall plot is rather underwhelming. A reporter talks about an upcoming awards ceremony for the Edgars (essentially the Oscars), before cutting to some kind of mad scientist (with the voice of Professor Farnsworth from Futurama). Yakko, Wakko and Dot don’t even seem to be part of this plot, they just collect the awards as they go about their business.

The dialogue in the cutscenes is fairly amusing, with some fourth wall breaking here and there. At one point Yakko gets asked “what brings you here” which he responds with “That person with the controller in their hand” – with the conversation moving on at a good pace instead of pausing for you to notice. It’s the individual bits of dialogue with NPCs that are the highlight of the game.

For the rest of it, it’s a mildly enjoyable 3D platformer. There’s nothing too special about it, but there’s not much that’s egregious, either. One thing that did annoy me is that there are lots of small gaps everywhere, and Yakko has a slide move where he can clearly fit under – but an invisible wall stops you. Instead, you have to find a hula skirt for Dot, who can then limbo under these gaps. It’s just frustrating when you specifically have a move that seems like its entire purpose is for sliding under obstacles.

Fine
Unfortunately for Animaniacs, probably the most important thing to consider when reviewing a platform game is collision detection. If you’re falling through walls or merging into things, there’s very little point in carrying on. The nature of the genre depends on solid level design, and herein lies Animaniacs’ problem.
