While other people had superhero comics, I had a large collection of my step Dad’s Asterix comics to read. I loved them, smashing Romans left, right and centre and getting involved in a manner of hijinks. The series revolves around a village in Gaul – the only place not under the control of the Romans, thanks to a magic potion made by the village druid. This game is made by Étranges Libellules, who developed almost entirely licensed games – the one exception was the final Legend of Spyro game.

As you’d expect, the game is a beat-’em-up with a bit of platforming involved. What’s important is that everything is quick and smooth – you’ll make your way through legions of romans in no time. And, true to the comic, they get sent of flying when you defeat them. There’s nothing deep, but its still fun to spend a while smashing Romans.

Along the way are a few side activities – a few puzzles involving torches or using Obelix to help move Asterix around with his insane strength, or sliding down large slopes. It adds a bit to the mix and adds to the charm.

Fun
It’s almost as though it’s a ‘test’ game. Something a developer bashed out to work out half-decent ideas before removing them from this and including them in a real game. You know, something that’s actually fun to play for longer than ten minutes.

Remake or remaster?
A remaster was released on modern consoles. It has more colourful graphics and looks quite nice. They remastered both games and then made a third.
