After a few years, Backyard Baseball comes back to GameCube. And the graphics have seen a colossal improvement. Yet, at the same time, a lot of the charm from the previous game has gone. The previous game felt more child-like, with baseball fields that looked like kids marked them out in a field themselves. These just like professional arenas, just with backgrounds based on different areas of the city.

As a result, it just comes across as far more boring, and ends up feeling more like a discount Power Pros game, with slow gameplay (it takes so long for the players to walk into position) and everything feeling inconsistent. Without the charm of the earlier game, it’s just not unique in any way.

Poor
The gameplay is buggy and unbalanced, the graphics look amazingly dated, the audio is a total mess, and what little fun that can be found will grow tiresome in a few hours of play tops. When games like Mario Baseball exist, there’s simply no reason to give cash to underachieving products. Younger gamers deserve better.

Remake or remaster?
Not for this one. The series is back, though, with a new game in 2026.
