While the main Baldur’s Gate games are large RPGs, the Dark Alliance spin-off series is more of a hack n slash with a lot of similarities to the Gauntlet games, including co-op multiplayer. It still has RPG elements like levelling up and choices in conversations, but these are very muted and don’t lead to much difference in the game itself.

For the most part, you’re wandering through corridors killing a large amount of enemies. You have one attack button and a special ability, and can swap between your sword and a bow. I feel like melee and ranged attacks should have been separate buttons to make it easier to use both, especially with the vast amount of enemies the game throws at you. The game is also balanced with two players in mind, so you’ll be grinding and failing more on your own.

You’ll occasionally encounter puzzles, such as putting three jugs on three switches, but they’re nothing more than a way to slow you down. One very bizarre thing tis that there are a ton of switches that are just right next to the door it opens. The game occasionally tries to add variety, but it doesn’t do this very well either, as the platforming sections are frustrating and the stealth section where you have to avoid rotating eyes is very dull.

With a friend, Dark Alliance can be a mindless but enjoyable romp, and it’s a shame it doesn’t support more players. On your own, it’s just mashing the same button at repetitive enemies again and again.

Fine
So, Baldur’s Gate may not be anything particularly new, but it offers a wonderfully polished take on old-school RPGing. A fun game, however, is transformed into a hugely enjoyable on if you’ve got a mate to join in.
