Bayblade is a popular toy that is essentially a fancy spinning top. You pull a rip cord and let them loose in a little bowl to see which one lasts the longest before stopping. This is a video game version of that. You can slightly control your spinning tops, and launch special attacks, but the game doesn’t explain a single one of its mechanics, and your opponents pretty much play perfectly from the get go.

However, it doesn’t take long to come up with a tactic that works most of the time – when your opponent is near the edge, use your special attack. Most of the time you’ll knock them out of the bowl and score points. Before long you’ll beat the 7-match long tournament before moving on to…well, nothing. That one tournament and single matches (against CPU or another player) are the only modes of the game, and for some reason the last four rounds of a tournament lock you out of playing a game with friends. You can get more parts by repeatedly playing the tournament.

That’s if you can even make it through a tournament. The game has commentary, which is incredibly annoying. You’ll have heard every voice line multiple times by the end of the first fight, and each special attack (which can come every few seconds) has the commentator stunned and a low quality slideshow interrupting the gameplay. It’s an horrific assault on your eyes and ears.

Worst
It’s awful. Spend the money on real Beyblade toys if you’re that keen, but if you’re foolish enough to buy the game you should have your eyelids sewn open, your thumbs glued to the pad, and be forced to play it until your brain shrivels to the size of a pea.

Remake or remaster?
I’m sure someone clever could turn Bayblade into a decent game.
