Bomberman Jetters is based on the Japanese-only anime of the same name, which means a brand new story and setting for Bomberman, with some really nice animated cutscenes throughout. That said, Bomberman has never been consistent with style, especially in its 3D platformers. Which kind of makes it ironic that Jetters is the first Bobmerman platformer to actually stick to the same gameplay mechanics, with it being a direct sequel (in terms of gameplay) to Bomberman Generations.

Unfortunately, it sticks so close to the Generations formula that there’s very little to talk about. You can now switch to a bomber called Max at any point (although the story doesn’t even mention that he’s with Bomberman). This is needed to blast a few doors and bosses and that’s it. Everything else is the same slow plod with a few mild puzzles thrown in. If you really liked the first and just want a level pack, then this game is for you.

The classic multiplayer also returns, but instead of building on the previous one, it replaces a bunch of modes with new ones, with none of them as enticing as the original batch. It’s something to only get for extra variation if you’ve excused the original but still want something the same but slightly different.

Fine
Bomberman Jetters presents a lot of disappointment with few surprises wrapped up in the middle. The single player mode is one of the worst attempts at a Bomberman adventure yet, and the multiplayer mode is fun but still sits below the bar set by multiple Bomberman titles that have released over the years. If you don’t have any Bomberman games of your own, I would go as far as to say you must get this game. There’s nothing like a good marathon session of four-player standard battle with your friends. If you’ve already got a Bomberman game – any of them, with the exception of Hero – skip this one. The twenty dollar price tag is good, but not worth it when you can dive into the bargain bin or download for free (Bomberman Online for the PC) a better version. I guess I’ll have to cross my fingers for the next release in this series.

Remake or remaster?
It could be included in a Bomberman collection, and merging the multiplayer modes would make it better.
