I only vaguely remember parts of the Digimon show from when I was a kid, but even I can tell that this is an unrelated game that had Digimon shoved in at the last moment. The Digimon World series, at least 1 to 3, are RPG games set in the Digimon universe, with the Digimon using their abilities to attack in turn-based combat.

However, this fourth game is a dungeon crawler where the Digimon use axes and guns. It has absolutely nothing to do with the previous ones and doesn’t feel much like Digimon at all. You pick your starting monster (who you control directly, like you’ve morphed into them instead of entering the digital world yourself) and then proceed to attack endless enemies with very tedious attacks.

The game loves making you grind previous levels many times to level up, and the grinding gets even worse if you want to digivolve. You unlock these with side missions and they’re not related to your original Digimon, they’re just random other ones, and are essentially a new character so you have to start at level 1 again and grind endlessly.

The enemies are dull, the levels are dull and the caves leading to bosses are dull. The levels are also filled with obstacles that you have to smash with your charge attack which does absolutely nothing except slow you down. Even if you get three other people, you’ll have far more fun playing Gauntlet again.

Poor
Digimon World 4 is a dull and largely forgettable experience, which, considering the quality of the previous three Digimon World games, really shouldn’t be too big of a surprise to anyone. Those who are blissfully unaware of the world of Digimon likely wouldn’t have played Digimon World 4 in the first place, even by accident. However, fans who are thinking about picking this up might want to consider why the creators of Digimon would punish their fans with a game as categorically unenjoyable as this.
