Dokopon is set in a kingdom where everyone loves money, so there are absolutely no issues in the kingdom at all (which doesn’t seem right). That is, until a demon called Walther turns up to cause chaos, stealing all the money from the king’s vault. You and three other adventures must fight monsters to gather them back. This is done via… a board game.

This is a standard roll and move affair, with the added annoyance that you have to roll the exact number to land on the final space of the board, meaning you can just flip flop around it while all the CPU players get to it with no issues. That said, I don’t fully understand the game’s mechanics (due to dodgy translation ) as, in the first match, I didn’t reach the final boss and I had the least money, but somehow came first.

Most spaces you land on are monsters. These whisk you away into a simple turn based RPG battle, where you have a few options (you can get more spells from the board). For basic enemies, this is really just a case of just using the standard attack. You’ll gain gold and experience from winning fights, which lets you level up to improve your stats. The problem is, with how these are most of the spaces in the game, you’ll have to go through a lot of these fights before your next turn, and they can’t be sped up or skipped.

Other games in this series had large maps with purchasing and managing property as a major feature, but all that has been stripped out of this version, giving you small boards with not much to do. There is one nice feature where pressing Y after rolling will show you the spaces you can reach and you can just select one to go to, but that doesn’t make up for the lack of anything else.

Poor
If this were a money-earning battle where the winner was the one who made the most money, you could win by going around the excavation square. This is just too unbalanced… Players could make rules such as “banning the use of excavation squares.”

Have been meaning to get the Switch game for some time (which is a remaster of a previously Japanese only Dokapon Kingdom Wii game with a newly added online mode).
Seems like a neat concept, and has potential for some good ol’ fashioned backstabbing fun! 😀
