When you make “wacky characters” a big part of a game, they really need to have some charm to them. The cast of Freekstyle is a group of people that anyone would immediately dislike the moment they talk. Thankfully, the game makes up for that by its stunt-based racing gameplay, which takes what EA did in SSX and adds it to supercross motorbikes.

Freekstyle is suitably speedy, easy to control and makes it easy to perform tricks. Performing tricks increases your boost, which lets you perform better combos. Jumping through rings will also add bonuses to your stunts. On top of the basic race mode, and free roam stunt mode, there’s also a mode where you have to win while also scoring a specific number of points, which is a good spin on things, however I would prefer it being more points-based with points earned for performing well in a race, like Excite Truck.

There’s not a great deal to Freekstyle, though, with a small number of tracks and no minigames, which would have worked much better in this setting than supercross games that tend to have an array of them. Still, it’s a blast while it lasts.

Fun

But Freekstyle also suffers because SSX simply does everything so much better. Why have fish fingers when you can have smoked salmon?
