Zoids is a long-running Japanese franchise all about animal-based robotic mechs. For someone who knows as much Japanese anime as me: they’re very much like the Zords from Power Rangers, only they don’t fold to become one giant robot. Upon starting Zoids Vs, I was very impressed with the speed of the game, with the machines running at very fast speeds, but still feeling like large machines. It’s something that’s difficult to get right, but they managed it.

In the campaign, you’ll gain lots of weapons and there’s a good amount to customise. You can swap your Zoids and layouts between each fight, and all the weapons feel very different to use. Some lock on, some fire fast and one is a very powerful cannon that you can only use if you lock yourself into position and become a turret. The controls take some getting used to as the left stick is for moving forward and turning, the right initiates dodges in the chosen direction, but they make sense with the machines.

The missions take place in large arenas. The campaign starts out simple, putting you against an individual target then a few weaker ones. It very soon ramps up in difficulty, with you having to take on three or more full sized Zoids. While there’s a two-player option, I couldn’t find a mode that lets you select a CPU to fight against.
While there isn’t a lot to it, the main combat is rather enjoyable.

Fun
If you’re a Zoids fan, you’re going to buy this game no matter what I say, aren’t you? Tomy has a pretty darn good game here from some aspects, but the poor A.I., terrible camera, and lack of much replay value really hurts the game’s overall score. Still, I’m giving the game an 8 out of 10 (which is probably more than it deserves), because I’ll admit I really did enjoy myself in some portions of the game (that and I’ve watched the intro 10 times, and loved it each time!).
