The Frogger series is rather strange. While the gameplay across the PS1/N64 and PS2/GameCube eras never really changed, each game seems to have its own style and tone – they can’t even decide on the naming structure, as the previous Frogger’s Adventures games were Game Boy Advance games, and then the sequel to this drops the “Adventures” part of the name. In terms of tone, the previous had an epic fantasy feel to it, while the cutscenes in this are more of what you’d expect: terrible kids TV show level.

It also starts out with Frogger’s creepy uncle (or something) who then has a space ship land on him out of nowhere (also seemingly destroying the swamp, it’s really not explained very well) and you have to help FIRST (Frog International Rescue Support Team) take on TRIP (Tyrannical Reptiles in Power), because of course bad acronyms are involved.

But the gameplay hasn’t moved on in the slightest. If anything, it feels even simpler than the last game. Move around, use shoulder buttons to to rotate, jump to move two spaces and use your tongue to move objects. When the previous game was already a step down from Zapper (a “we’ll make it without the IP” game from the developers of the PS1 Frogger games), it’s just boring with not much to say about it.

Frogger’s Adventure: The Rescue is a rather bland experience. It’s not bad, but it’s not good either. Some new types of puzzles, like pulling platforms closer to you, adds some more puzzle variation to Frogger, but the puzzles aren’t that challenging. Control is also an enemy and is rather unintuitive — causing several pointless deaths.
