Fed up of making James Bond games where you play as James Bond, EA decided to play as a disgraced agent that becomes a villain. But that wasn’t good enough for their marketing department, so how can they trick people into buying the game? I know, reuse the name of Rare’s legendary GoldenEye, and justify it in the weakest possible way by giving the main character a mechanical eye that’s coloured gold. I wish I was making this up.

A big part of this game is dual wielding weapons, something that was a big focus of Halo 2, which came out a few weeks before this alongside Half-Life 2 and Metroid Prime 2, – this wasn’t exactly good timing for releasing a mediocre shooter. You can mix and match various guns with each having their own shooting button, but you’ll have used most combinations by the end of the second level.

The kills are also fairly brutal, which is why the plot doesn’t have you fighting MI6 or any local law enforcement. Instead, it’s all about infighting between different villains, so you’re still just killing bad guys. Bond villains from different films make an appearance – Scaramana makes your eye, Xenia is a goon and Oddjob is your partner, who randomly attacks you in a cutscene and falls into a bottomless pit.

It’s all entirely uninspired, your eye has different visors but the most interesting thing it does is mess with certain weapons. The game is a cheap cash in trying to use a beloved name for something unrelated.

Poor
Forget the name; tis isn’t GoldenEye. This doesn’t come anywhere close to that classic, and certainly won’t change the face of the genre. What it is, however, is a solid blaster that entertains well enough in short doses.
