The name conjured up two things in my mind. It made me think of the horrendous GT 64, but luckily this has nothing to do with that one. On top of that, it also gave me the impression that this was a Gran Turismo style racing simulator, but it turns out to be more arcade-like. CT Cube did eventually get released outside of Japan as GT Pro Series on the Wii.

GT Cube featured a rather nice cel-shaded aesthetic, although this is fairly muted and doesn’t go quite as far as the upcoming Auto Modellista (another cel-shaded car game). The cars themselves look really nicely detailed, but the tracks are really bland. Handling is smooth with lots of simple drifting, although the AI is an issue.

At the start of a race, your opponents zoom off into the distance, even if you get a boost start (you’ll also phase through cars that don’t move fast enough if you boost). This seems to be a way to counter how bad they are at racing, as you’ll easily overtake them all by the end of the race, the only difficult track (out of the 10 in the game) was the shortest one, as you have less time to catch up. The main racing is enjoyable, there’s just not a lot else.

Fun
In all fairness it’s a respectable effort and there’s some enjoyment to be had from it but by today’s standards, with the likes of Gran Turismo and Burnout offering far more challenge and control in their respective racing fields, this feels too simplistic and too dated to make any kind of lasting impression.
