The final Mario Party on GameCube, and this one feels much more streamlined, removing overly complex mechanics like the day and night system. In place of this are different mechanics for each board, making how you earn stars different each time.

This is a really nice way to do it as it gives each board even more personality. There is one board where this doesn’t work well – one where you climb up a mountain and get to buy a star at the top, as the board is just a single straight line, but other items delve into the Mario Party formula much better.

The minigames are also good fun as well, all feeling snappy and simple (in a good way). There’s a good amount of different formats and variety and there seem to be no utterly dreadful ones. There’s also some 8 player minigames where people share controllers and use an analogue stick and shoulder button each, it’s a nice bonus mode.

The microphone is back and does seem to be more responsive, for the most part). Most of the minigames are made with the issues with recognising words in mind, although there’s one minigame where you have to count down from 10 and shout stop at the closest to zero, the voice recognition is not good enough for this minigame in the slightest.

All in all, this feels like a breath of fresh air for Mario Party. It feels like there’s more focus on minigames and the unique boards.

Fun
Mario Party seems happy in its rut, the older cousin of Wario Ware, where unlocking the actual fun takes weeks and your only reward is a static polygon model of a T-shirt.

Remake or remaster?
A Mario Party collection where you can mix and match stuff from different games would be great.
