Mobile Suit Gundam is a franchise I know little about, with the only previous experience being the Virtual Boy game. Still, I know it’s about large mechs that can fly in space, with generally two factions duking it out. This follows a plotline of the “One Year War” and lets you play as either side, with the good guys being the “easy” difficulty. In the space missions, moving about works well, and you auto target your opponents to help you move around to fight them. It was a promising start.

The second mission is a ground mission and is absolutely brutal. I may be missing something vital, but I just kept getting destroyed. When I tried staying back, the base I had to protect got destroyed. I also ran out of ammo and using the sword just gets you killed. It doesn’t help that the draw distance is dreadful and you can barely see anything. I will chalk down this initial difficulty to me not understanding something. This game was big enough in Japan to get a special collector’s edition GameCube.

Fine
On its gameplay alone, Mobile Suit Gundam: Pilots’ Locus is a decent mech-combat game with some depth that carries the burden of a camera system that can be extremely trying. Factor in the appeal of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series and you have a game that’ll likely please fans of the show.
