The GameCube version of NBA Street 3 has something that the other versions don’t: Mario. Presumably following on from the success of Link in SoulCalibur 2, Nintendo started letting other publishers use Mario characters in their games, with EA using them in a few of their sports titles.

And they’ve done a good job. Mario, Luigi and Peach form a team (Peach seems to be by far the most effective player out of the three), have their own themed court and the commentators will even talk about them. It’s just a shame you can’t use them in the singleplayer campaign.

As for the basketball action, it’s the same kind of thing of having very powerful abilities to dodge players and not much to defend. It’s fun in short bursts.

Fun
Take the gang out of the equation and the game would still be worth buying – we’d definitely give it the same score. With them, it’s something that’s going to appeal to Nintendo enthusiasts as well as basketball nuts, which is a very smart move on the part of both companies involved.

Remake or remaster?
One that brings the features of all three games would be good. Or perhaps it’s time for a home console Mario Basketball.
