I haven’t paid much attention to the Power Rangers since the original Mighty Morphin, but it seemed in 2004 they circled back round to dinosaurs. Just like the N64 Power Rangers game, this ignores the most obvious kind of game for the franchise – a beat-’em-up. This time it’s a vehicle-based affair with you driving around the various Zords.

Throughout the game you’ll unlock a few different Zords such as a T-Rex, Pterodactyl and Triceratops. Instead of swapping between the vehicles you just sort of change into the other ones – press Y and the next one loads in. It makes no sense but at least it means you don’t have to travel across the same areas multiple times.

The levels take place in a bunch of fairly small arenas, with a few missions in each one. The missions are all really dull, most just going to an area and wiping out enemies, a few escort quests and a few puzzles where you have to kit buttons that match the specific Zords.

Even the few boss fights with the Megazord fail to get exciting. In these, you use the special ability a few times to defeat the boss. If you haven’t saved some or these, you may need to roam the map to collect more. Thankfully, the story is very short (25 missions, none taking more than a couple of minutes) however you’re still left wanting it to ends before you get there.

Poor
Dino Thunder’s overall lack of depth, difficulty and graphical pizzazz will forever delegate it to your little brother’s (or sister’s) game shelf. Parents should pick it up if they want to a game easy enough for their little kids. Hey, if 19 bucks will buy silence and peace of mind for weary parents, it’s quite a steal.
