For fans of Robotech, Battlecry seems like a game that is a decent adaptation. It uses the voice actors from the show, but tells a new story where you experience the events from the show from the perspective of a new character, Jack Archer. The cel shaded look not only captures the style of the show really well, abut also means that the game still looks really nice now.
Robotech centres around special aircraft that has three forms: a jet, a mech and something half way between. The jet is for high speed arial combat, the mech is for ground combat and the half form is something you’ll only begrudgingly use to pick up stuff, as it’s frustrating to control but the only one that can collect objects. While you can swap at any time, the game’s biggest weakness is that the levels aren’t designed for it: some are jet levels, some are mech levels. The mech levels feature lots of invisible walls so you can’t go high.
The objectives don’t change that much thorough the game, either, and many levels are just blasting stuff for ages and then the level ends (often in a way that makes it feel like you weren’t important to the fight at all). The mech and jet forms are fun to play as, but the game doesn’t really utilise its main mechanics very well.
Fine
It’s by no means a bad effort, and the experience is of a consistent enough quality to satisfy anyone (which is more than can be said for Clone Wars). If you’re a fan of the Robotech series, we can honestly say this is not to be missed, as the game is both sizeable and accurate. If not, you’ll find it an enjoyable, if unremarkable blaster.

Remake or remaster?
The GBA Battlecry game got a full remake, so it would be nice for a collection of Battlecry and Invasion.
